The GTcompello wheelchair is a human powered tilting trike which allows paraplegics and quadriplegics with adequate hand and arm function to access road terrain for activities such as touring and racing.
The concept is and entry for the prestigious James Dyson Award. The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. It’s run by the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson’s charitable trust, as part of its mission to inspire young people about design engineering.
The GTcompello has an adjustable back support for accommodating users of various heights and a standard grip shift gear and brake levers connected to disc brakes. The three wheeled base tilts to help with turning and stability. A shock suspension strut located under the seat and near to the large rear wheel aids in smoothing out the ride. The propulsion tiller requires a rowing motion as opposed to the cranking motion found on conventional hand cycles.
