I’m in a general sense familiar with hippotherapy and its physical and emotional benefits. I must say that I am pleased that this therapy modality has finally come into its own and has gained entry into the mainstream. What I did not realize was the win-win situation that some of these programs can offer.

It’s not just about people and how they benefit. It’s also about the horses. I was recently emailing with Cindy Correa, of the Acres of Opportunity Ranch Equine Learning Center in Broomfield, Colorado and thought I would take a tour of their website. That’s when I discovered something I did not know- Second Chance is what it’s called, and it’s a marvelous concept:

“Acres of Opportunity Ranch (AOR) is a “Second Chance Organization.” AOR partners with horses that have been rescued or partially retired in attempt to educate the community about horses. This effort helps minimize the number of horses that are “thrown away” due to lack of understanding and financial means to care for a horse.

AOR provides a loving and safe place for people of all ages to come and enjoy horses on a level that works for both the horse and the human, physically and mentally.”

What a great concept and what a super way to utilize these wonderful animals. If you are wondering about the spotted cutie in the picture, well, here’s his story:

Although he only has a few teeth left in his mouth, he doesn’t let that slow him down! He frequently enjoys running with the young horses in the herd. He is very spunky and has a huge personality, not to mention-very unique spots! Dash was joined the AOR community in April 2008.
