It seems that MoDot (Missouri Department of Transportation) has installed some new traffic lights in St. Louis. These are complete with built in cameras for controlling traffic. Good deal- But not for local wheelchair users.
The lights are mounted on rather large cement bases which were planted close to several curb cuts or ramps and have hogged up enough space to render the ramps non-compliant with ADA standards.
No problem though- MoDot engineer Deanna Venker is on top of it and has stated:
“MoDOT will rip out the illegal signal standards, but Venker said she didn’t know when that would happen. Or how much it would cost. Or where on Chouteau, exactly, the illegal standards are located. Or who is at fault.”
