For some people motorcycling is a passion. Be it in competition or for recreation the sport has millions of devotees.
No matter how safe a cycler is you can never eliminate the potential for accidents. In many instances these accidents result in spinal cord injury and paralysis.
There have certainly been advancements in protective gear for motorcyclists over the years. The full face helmet, assorted body armor, motorcycle airbags, and now The Neck Brace System by BMW.
The Neck Brace System was developed by BMW Motorrad in conjunction with South African physician Dr Chris Leatt and his team of accident researchers, bio-mechanics and accident surgeons. It provides protection by offering a restraining effect if the rider’s head moves excessively forwards, backwards, or to the sides.
The rider is also able to retain freedom of movement needed for riding, with any risk of over-stretching of the neck, in any given direction, significantly reduced. Injuries arising from forces coming down from the helmet on to the spine are absorbed by the ridged edging that surrounds the Neck Brace.
The Neck Brace System sells for over $600 dollars. I’m sure it’s worth every penny and then some.
Here’s to safer cycling!
