Empowering The Mrs.

A few years ago Jerry Bowers decided that the powered wheelchair his wife was using was just not cutting it. Getting around was slow and sometimes even dangerous. Seven MPH was just not the right number for his wife Bonnie. Jerry B. figured there was safety in numbers, and I’m sure a bunch of fun. So, being an avid biker, a self proclaimed “Gear Head”, and a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association, he set about empowering the Mrs.
Empowering Mrs. Bowers would include a Honda motorcycle engine turned wheelchair, or dragster, or fun machine, or … No, Mrs. Bowers does not get to use both of these machines. The Mr. liked hers so much that he built one for himself. The one on the right is the Mrs. Model and the one on the left is the Mr. Model. Personally I think “Mrs.” got short changed in the deal.
By the way, Jerry is not a wheelchair user. Just someone who recognizes fun when he builds it. Although I’m sure he has been tempted, he does not take his dragster onto public roads. On the other hand, Mrs Bowers uses her “wheelchair” everyday.
According to Jerry, his dragster can top out at 130mph. He doesn’t say how fast the Mrs. Model can go, but does state that it can leave rubber and keep up with traffic. Included in the Mrs. Model is a shifting mechanism with a lever that comes up on the left side of the steering wheel. Jerry says it’s designed so she can shift and clutch with one lever. Good deal and a neat solution.
Before all hell breaks loose around me- I do not encourage reckless use of wheeled mobility devices such as wheelchairs, motorcycles, skateboards, shopping carts or … I do respect innovation. I do appreciate fun, and I most definitely applaud those who have the ambition to come up with their own workable solutions. 130 MPH! That’s a lot of solution.
