If you are an individual with SCI/D living in the affected area of Louisiana, Alabama, or Mississippi, and are in need of relief or require emotional or psychosocial support, please contact United Spinal Association toll free at 888-211-3635. The Assisted Living Association of Alabama is currently prepared to accept up to 350 residents in assisted living and specialty care assisted living. SB HELP – Hurricane Emergency Life-support program supporting people with Spina Bifida in the wake of Hurricane Katrina- Spina Bifida Association Operation Share Your Home Locate the America’s Second Harvest food bank or food-rescue organization that serves your local community. American Kidney Fund’s Disaster Relief provides block grants to dialysis centers, where social workers assess individual situations and allocate funds to help dialysis patients who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Easter Seals Gulf Coast Disaster Fund Every hurricane survivor with a disability must register with FEMA to be able to receive the full range of federal disaster relief assistance. Registrants must make it clear that they have a disability or chronic health care need. To register, call 1-800-621-FEMA, 1-800-462-9029 or 1-800-462-7585 (TDD/TTY), or register online. Social Security information for people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina Louisiana disability information resource – Request for assitance. Invacare Corporation (NYSE: IVC) established a Hurricane Katrina Home Medical Equipment (HME) hotline for HME providers and consumers to call regarding their urgent medical equipment needs. The toll-free telephone number is 1-888-966-6468. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has set up a toll-free number for veterans who normally receive health care at VA facilities in New Orleans, Gulfport, Miss., and Biloxi, Miss. The number can also be used by family members concerned about the location of veterans who were hospitalized at those facilities. The Gulfport facility has been closed, and the New Orleans medical center has been evacuated. The Biloxi facility is still operational. The number is 1-800-507-4571. It will be staffed continuously for the duration of the emergency. Online information system for United Cerebral Palsy’s Durable Medical and Adaptive Equipment Exchange. They are currently collecting and distributing items for indivduals with disabilities throughout Tennessee, as well as relief items for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Emergency assistance plans have been put in place for Hurricane Katrina victims who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families. The Community Emergency Preparedness Information Network (CEPIN) Project has designated CSD of Oklahoma and Northern Resource Virginia Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) as CEPIN contact centers for Hurricane Katrina victims and their families

csdoklahoma@c-s-d.orgThe Gulf Coast Benefits Planning Services (GCBPS) was established by the Houston Center for Independent Living to assist Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries in the 13 Texas Gulf Coast counties who want to work. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will make cystic fibrosis drugs available to all patients affected by the hurricane, regardless of their ability to pay. The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services has established a 24-hour, toll-free telephone number to assist hurricane evacuees with disabilities. The LSU Psychological Services Center (PSC) is offering services to victims of Katrina and Katrina’s aftermath. We offer groups in grief/loss, stress management, anxiety, and depression to the community and students. We are also conducting individual assessment and treatment anxiety and trauma/stress-related disorders for adults and children. Please call 578-1494 for more information.
