New York Hurricane Guide

Did you know that one out of four New Yorkers lives in a hurricane evacuation zone? Contrary to popular belief among many New Yorkers, coastal storms, including hurricanes, can and do impact the Big Apple.

New Yorkers live in a major coastal city with 578 miles of densely populated coastline. New Yorkers are most vulnerable to hurricanes and coastal storms between August and October. In a major hurricane, a storm surge could put some parts of New York City under more than 30 feet of water. The best way to prepare for hurricane season is to plan ahead.

Be prepared! Get a free copy of the Ready New York Hurricanes and New York City brochure (available in 11 languages and audio tape) that includes a map of the city’s hurricane zones and additional planning information. Call 311 or download a copy using this link
