Only Five States Require Seat Belts For Wheelchair Users

After a serious vehicle accident in which a wheelchair user was killed, Associated Press undertook a study to determine how many states require that wheelchair users wear seat belts while being transported in a vehicle.

The short article is cloudy but appears to be referring to a seat belt for the person in the wheelchair and not a tie-down for the wheelchair itself.

Here’s what they found:

Five states – Arkansas, Georgia, Minnesota, Washington and Wisconsin – require both wheelchairs and their users to be secured on paratransit buses, which take disabled people to work and doctor’s offices.

    Jim, the article does mention the federal regulations, the buses are equipped but the states do not require that they are actually used.
