Lex Frieden will moderate a special webcast on “Pain and Spinal Cord Injury,”
The webcast is part of the continued focus on knowledge and prevention of secondary conditions associated with SCI, and includes an overview of pain prevalence and prevention in people with SCI.
Topics include the significance of the problem, various classification systems, a discussion of overall evaluation of the patient with spinal cord injury pain and review treatment options. Five clinical types of pain including mechanical, segmental, central, visceral, and psychic will be reviewed with recommended treatment of each type.

Lex Frieden, United Spinal Association Board Member and Director of the Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) and Senior Vice President at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, will moderate the webcast.
In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Professor Frieden Chairperson of the National Council on Disability, an independent federal agency located in Washington D.C. The Council is charged with making recommendations on disability policy issues to the President and Congress. His term ended in August, 2006. Professor Frieden also recently completed an eight-year term as a member of the United Nations Panel of Experts on the Standard Rules for Disability. He is immediate past President of Rehabilitation International, a federation of 200 national and international organizations and agencies in 90 countries working for the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities and their families within society and for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities.
