Roll On Capitol Hill

| June 13, 2012 | 0 Comments

A Kaiser roll pinned to the top of the Capital DomeWhile not quite as edible as a tasty Kaiser Roll, United Spinal’s Roll on Capitol Hill is nonetheless very palatable, especially so for the wheelchair users who will be involved.

The upcoming Roll on Capitol Hill is the first of what will become an annual legislative advocacy event that addresses issues that have or will directly impact the health, independence and quality of life of individuals living with spinal cord injury or disease.

Hoopla and hype aside, what is truly the standout here are the Rollers. The dozens of wheelchair users who will be attending the Roll. These wheelers are coming from all over the country because they have had enough and want to be heard. They want elected officials and bureaucrats to hear the real story of how misguided decisions and policies are affecting real people in their efforts to find employment, proper health care, and wheelchairs that work for them instead of against them.

A number of the Rollers are old acquaintances. Most are gritty and tenacious folks who are not shy when it comes to speaking up. I wish them the best of luck and smooth rolling.

My hat goes off to the wheelers heading down to DC for hanging tough and getting tough.
