What is one of the great fears shared by powered wheelchair users? Running out of juice and being stranded between here and there.
Wheelchair batteries can be a real pain and about as reliable as a wet book of matches. Powerchair users have lived with this problem ever since powered wheelchairs came on the scene. Wheelchair technology has changed dramatically over the years but the fuel source has not kept up with those changes.
The Suzuki MIO is a prototype wheelchair that holds out the promise of more reliable powered wheeling. The MIO, features a fuel cell that uses methanol as a fuel source to generate hydrogen and therefore electricity. The tank holds 4 litres and that’s sufficient to provide MIO with a range of approximately 25 miles. There’s also an LCD display showing fuel level and power sources. Unlike wheelchairs that rely solely on charging of the battery, MIO can be refilled easily as needed.
A large capacity Li-ion secondary battery acts as a store for the electricity generated and a back up source of power.
